Anna Barlow
-
Originally from the Bristol area, Anna Barlow graduated from Bath Spa University College with a degree in Ceramics in 2003. She has been based in London and working as a ceramic artist for about 20 years, during which time she also assisted Kate Malone and lectured at Central St Martins.
Anna is descended from a long line of potters and artists, growing up surrounded by remnants of things made by her creative relatives. A family who embraces celebration has been a clear influence in her work, as well as spending part of her childhood in Cornwall, observing tourist culture.
These rituals of celebration inspire Anna, however big or small. Her work examines habits around sugary food that can be joyful but also embraces the dysfunction and darker side of how we consume confections.
She has always been attracted to clay, and is drawn to the possibilities that clay holds and the surfaces that can be achieved by experimentation and research. The boundaries and "rules" of ceramics are pushed, fusing low-fired earthenware clay with high fired porcelain to create contrasting surfaces that evoke edibility.
Anna’s work has been exhibited across the world, most recently at Design Miami and Homo Faber.
