Dana Cowie
-
Dana Cowie spent 4 years of art college in Toronto, Canada majoring in drawing and painting in the mid 90’s. After graduation, Dana went on to work in public art galleries and as a fashion stylist. It wasn’t until a few years later, after she’d married and started a family, that she shifted focus to a full time career in painting.
From an early age, Dana had a deep connection to England. Her Grandmother was a WWII war bride and was raised on “all things English”. As such, she was influenced by both the Canadian and English pastoral scenes. In recent years, Dana and her young family relocated to the countryside, and it was here, surrounded by water and open farmland, that she began to feature the landscape as her subject.
Through Dana’s art, the countryside as a theme, is translated into cubist shapes of colour and tone. Using classic impasto oils and her Grandmother’s 1940’s palette knives, she works to create abstract landscapes that are fractured and highly textural. Dana’s loose and painterly approach, distorts her picture plane and reduces the elements to a patchwork of geometric shapes. Expressionist marks are layered until the surface takes on it’s own relief pattern, and the image and atmosphere emerge.
Dana’s work is collected internationally.
