Davide Galbiati
-
Italian sculptor Davide Galbiati was educated by his family from a young age to work with his hands. The family business of historic car restoration and luxury car prototyping taught him how to work shape and volume into metal as well as search for detail and line.
After a brief career in restoration, he met Italian artists Giovanni Padovan and Mauro Corona and discovered sculpture. He was so inspired he decided to leave his career at age 28 and joined the Professional School of Sculpture in the Italian Dolomites.
Here Davide was trained in sculpture, modelling and anatomy, and specialised in drawing and sculpting from a live model. Encouraged by his instructors, he participated in “Premio Arte” in Milan in 2007, where he was awarded the Scultura Accademia prize. He later won the Puvis de Chavannes Prize and Gold Medal for sculpture in 2016.
Davide is very conscious that as an artist he has a responsibility to make the soul visible to human eyes. With great skill and unique vision, Davide sculpts to unearth the spirit beneath the surface of the body. He seeks to make visible what is normally invisible to the eye, creating forms that evoke both ancestral peoples and civilizations of an unknown future.
He draws his inspiration from the work of ancient sculptors, such as Thutmose (sculptor of the pharaoh Akhenaten) and archaic Greek sculptures. The earthly calm of the statuary of these ancient civilizations represents an opposition to the dynamism of the more fluid neo-classical forms that would come later. By finding inspiration in the ancient world, Davide seeks to oppose the noise of modernity with the vibrant silence of the still.
Davide’s sculptures are found in collections across the globe. He has lived in France since 2012, where he continues to create great sculptural works from his modest studio space.
