Kate Wickham

Kate Wickham was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire.
Kate originally trained and practiced in Ceramics – training at Camberwell School of Art and then completing an MA at the Royal College of Art. Her ceramic work is in a number of public and private collections in the UK and abroad.
Kate worked in art academia for many years both as a teacher and in senior management. She was the founder and head of the Ceramics Diploma Course at City Lit College in central London for 34 years. She was also the joint head of the Visual Art department at City Lit, and eventually the assistant principal at the college.
Around 2010 Kate made a switch from ceramics into painting. She sees this switch as a natural progression, as the ceramic work was always very painterly.
Her paintings are rooted in exploring landscape through abstraction, particularly in areas where she has a personal affinity to the landscape.
In 2018 Kate moved from London to live in the South Downs and living and working in this landscape has had an important influence on her work. The area of west Penwith in Cornwall is also an important source of inspiration.
She has a studio in southwest France, and working there for part of the year is a significant part of her practice.
The paintings are built up in many layers, overlaying each other, in a mixture of mediums - paint, oil stick, ink, pencil and crayon . Colour, texture and drawing / mark-making are integral to the work.
The paintings start in quite a loose way, but through over-drawing, layering, and attention to detail the paintings eventually develop more structured forms. The paintings are thoughtful, and can take time to evolve and resolve.
