Tom Diamantopoulo
-
Born in Brighton, Tom Diamantopoulo first made his mark in music as a songwriter and member of The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster.
Before his music career took off, he studied art at foundation and HND levels and was accepted into Canterbury for a Fine Art degree.
At 30, Tom returned to his first love - painting and fine art. Despite being colour blind (mild Protanopia), his passion for colour and art began in childhood. Self-taught, he spent his late twenties, while still active in the band, learning the fundamentals of painting, with a particular focus on photorealist portraiture before evolving into his abstract style.
Drawing inspiration from the colours, techniques, and styles of artists like Klee, Freud, and Gillian Ayres, Tom's work tries to capture the stark beauty of the English countryside in winter, or the vibrant wildlife of Asia.
A key focus in his work is the relationship between a subject and the space around it. This is explored through his thick textural layers, creating a density which invites the viewer to take greater notice of the painting's surface, whilst at the same time disrupting a sense of perspective and space between forms.
Tom has also been commissioned to paint public murals around Brighton, notably a temporary 50m mural for Moda in Hove, and the front of Franco Manca in central Brighton.
