Dawn Stacey
-
Dawn Stacey is a UK-based artist who has painted professionally for over 25 years. She has exhibited widely across the country, with work published for John Lewis and collections bought by both St. Wilfrid’s Hospice and the Brighton Hospital Trust.
Dawn began her art career by studying Textile Design at Derbyshire Art College. Following graduation, she journeyed into the industry as a Textile Designer, creating samples for a company in New York, which was featured in a collective publication of designs by acclaimed textile artist John Allen. In a shift of direction, Dawn later went on to gain an MA in Sequential Illustration from Brighton University, focussing on stories and sequences through design and art.
Dawn Stacey’s paintings are formed from observations of the landscape, evolved from walks on local nature reserves, woodlands, and more recently, her allotment. From here, Dawn takes inspiration from botanical plant imagery, found objects, sheds, pathways; forming a narrative wherein people have begun to emerge.
Dawn paints using acrylic on canvas, building layers to reveal images of perhaps a frosted leaf, embedded flowers, insects, birds or animals, often scratching into the surface. The final piece is intended to capture the essence and mood of a place.
With the adjustment of perspectives, Dawn presents the viewer with oversized flora or small figures and animals, to form mysterious and fantastical narratives. Influenced by decorative frescos, Dawn’s early love of textiles - in particular tapestries and needlework samplers - play into her approach and compositions.
